My family's van broke down 6 miles outside of Carrizozo, NM, on a Saturday afternoon. We were moving from Tucson, AZ, to Minneapolis, MN. We wanted to go to church Sunday morning, and we came across 1st Baptist Church. The men and women at the church were so inviting. They let our 6 year old son ring the church bell before the service. They asked our 9 year old daughter if she'd read something during the service (a verse from Luke). The pastor, Rev Hayden Smith, preached a wonderful sermon that I'll never forget - on doubting Thomas. They invited us back for the evening service, which we enjoyed. Everyone brought food, so we got to eat an amazing meal of home cooked food, and spent the next couple hours hanging out with them. After church they gave our family clothing, since we were stranded in the town, waiting for our van to get fixed. They also gave us a ton of food, so that we wouldn't go hungry.
The next day, one of the 90 year old men from the church drove over to our motel room, and took us out for a nice dinner. The pastor's wife checked in with us a couple times a day, over the next 4 days, to make sure we were taken care of. Other church members would stop by and bring us food, and encourage us.
They're a smaller church of roughly 30 men and women, but what they lack in size they made up for in Spirit, and wow, so much love and encouragement. We plan on going back to that church next time we travel through Carrizozo. Hopefully we won't be there again because of a broken down van...but we intend to go back again.
God bless everyone there. We definitely recommend the church.Added February 20, 2017 by Nate Erickson
